Dear Master’s and Doctoral Students,
With the start of the Fall Semester of the 2026–2027 Academic Year, I wish all students continuing their studies in our master’s and doctoral programs a successful and productive semester. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to our new students and express our delight at having you as part of the Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering family.
Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering is a field that is constantly evolving in line with advancing technologies, changing needs, and international standards. For this reason, during your graduate studies, we expect you not only to acquire existing knowledge but also to become researchers who investigate, question, generate new knowledge, and share that knowledge with the scientific community.
Throughout your graduate studies, it is of great importance that you regularly follow the scientific literature in your field, approach your research topics with an original and critical perspective, and conduct your work in accordance with the principles of academic ethics.
Maintaining regular communication with your advisors at every stage of your research will help ensure that your work progresses in a planned and healthy manner. Throughout this process, we expect you to value not only the final results you will achieve but also the knowledge, experience, and academic perspective you will gain during the research process.
Master’s and doctoral courses are not based solely on the transfer of knowledge. Academic discussions, journal article reviews, presentations, and the sharing of different perspectives are an integral part of graduate education. Therefore, it is of great importance that you come to class prepared, attend regularly, and participate actively in class.
In the academic schedule—which is planned to consist of 12 weeks of classes and 1 week of midterm exams during the fall and spring semesters (specific only to the 2026–2027 academic year)—every class hour is valuable. Regular attendance ensures that topics are followed in a coherent manner and facilitates the smooth progress of subsequent work. Especially in graduate education, academic interactions and discussions in the classroom offer valuable insights that cannot be obtained solely from textbooks or digital resources.
For students in the thesis phase, establishing a regular study schedule, adhering to their research timelines, and maintaining constant communication with their advisors are crucial for a successful thesis process. In addition, alongside your thesis work, we encourage you to prepare scientific articles and papers whenever opportunities arise, attend scientific events such as conferences and symposia, and contribute to academic output.
Please remember that master’s and doctoral education is not merely a process of earning an academic degree. This process prepares you for the future as researchers who think scientifically, conduct research, question, generate knowledge, and share the knowledge you produce.
All faculty members in our department are ready to support you throughout your academic and professional development. You can always turn to your advisors and the department administration for assistance with any academic or administrative issues you encounter.
I hope this new academic year will be a successful, productive, and enriching period for all of you that contributes to your scientific growth. I encourage you to make the most of this semester by studying regularly, actively participating in classes, and giving your research the attention it deserves.
