Dear Undergraduate Students,
As we begin a new academic year, we, the Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering family, are delighted to welcome you back. We extend a warm welcome to our new students and send our warmest regards to our upperclassmen.
Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering is one of the key fields in the maritime sector, requiring a combination of engineering knowledge and skills in design, production, and operations. For this reason, the knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout your academic career are of great importance not only for your academic success but also for your professional and personal development.
During this period, we especially expect you to attend classes regularly and participate actively in them.
In university education, class attendance is one of the most important elements of the learning process. Considering that courses are scheduled for 12 weeks and the midterm exam period for 1 week during the fall and spring semesters (specific only to the 2026–2027 academic year), every class hour is highly valuable for your learning and personal development. Missing a class—especially in an engineering program where technical topics build upon one another—can make it difficult to understand subsequent material.
Attending class does not simply mean being physically present in the classroom. Participating in class discussions, hands-on exercises, examples, and drawing on our instructors’ professional experience are all integral parts of the educational process. Active participation is particularly crucial in practice-oriented courses such as laboratory sessions, technical drawing classes, and project work.
Academic success requires consistent and steady study habits. For this reason, we recommend that you attend your classes regularly, complete assigned work on time, and seek support from your instructors on topics you do not understand.
Throughout this semester, we expect you to be students who ask questions, conduct research, take responsibility for your own learning, and strive to find solutions. Remember that the purpose of a university education is not merely to earn a degree, but to prepare you for the future as individuals equipped with professional knowledge, capable of critical thinking, and able to solve problems from an engineering perspective.
Skills such as time management, teamwork, report writing, and technical presentations are competencies you will frequently use in your professional life. Therefore, please remember that every course, every assignment, and every project is an important asset for your professional future.
Our department’s faculty is always ready to support you so that you may graduate as successful and well-prepared engineers. Do not hesitate to seek support from your academic advisors and the department administration if you encounter any academic or personal challenges.
I hope this new semester will be a time filled with health, success, and growth for all of you. A new opportunity lies ahead for you to achieve your professional goals. I believe you will make the most of this opportunity by studying regularly, attending classes, and actively participating in university life.
